Trailer Towing

Towing a trailer is no longer an automatic right once a driver has passed their car driving licence. The rules affect those towing trailers, horseboxes or caravans and are far from simple with many people are unaware that they may be breaking (or about to break) the law.

The right to tow using a car or van is now referred to as category B+E on your driving licence.  If you are unsure as to whether or not you need to sit a second separate test for this entitlement click this link.

With us, your B+E training can be structured in a number of different ways.

  • Two hour long sessions

  • Half day sessions

  • Full day sessions

  • Week long courses

For the domestic driver

(i.e. someone paying for their own training, rather than a company paying) Typically but not exclusively you are planning to to tow a caravan, or possibly a horse box.  For you, we recommend the two hour long session basis, which is conducted on a 1 to 1 basis. This gives you the advantage of being able to structure the lessons in a manageable way around your schedule, but you will also be able to practice many of the driving tips on your own (whilst not towing) which could help you cut down the number of training sessions you will need.

For the commercial driver

(where the objective is qualification and productivity as quickly as possible) We tend to recommend the half day, daily or weekly basis.  However for companies sending several employees to be trained we can deliver on a 2 student to 1 instructor basis across a full day or weekly basis.  This will provide significant cost savings.

For smaller businesses

(such as the self employed) Either method is equally recommended.  We would aim to discuss with you your needs (such as how vital to your business rapid qualification is) and build a training plan around that.

The training can be conducted in your own vehicle and trailer if you already have a rig which you would be using (such as your own 4x4 for pulling a horse box) or in one of our vehicles, either a Kia Sedona or a Ford Transit.

Training will cover of all aspects of towing, including:

  • Matching the vehicle to the trailer based on weight restrictions.

  • Loading and load distribution and how this can affect stability.

  • Hitching and unhitching and vehicle checks when hitching complete.

  • Driving on the road with emphasis on a higher degree of observation, awareness and planning.

  • Legal aspects of towing.

  • Maneuvering the rig for the test exercise.

So, whatever your trailer towing training requirement please consider calling us, we cater to all, individuals, small business or large business.
