Fuel Efficient Driving Training
The Smart Way Driver fuel efficiency improvement course is based very much on
the SAFED for vans training course. It is delivered at a ratio of 2 drivers to one trainer.
A typical training day consists of:
-
The trainer meets the days trainees at around 08:30
(times may vary according to the employers normal schedules)
and begins with a driving licence check followed by an eyesight check similar to that performed
at the beginning of a driving test.
-
The trainer then gives the delegates a quick briefing as to the purpose of the training
and the days schedule.
-
Each driver then drives on a set
route of about 30 minutes driving which we use to get a benchmark on his or her
driving, (we count the number of gear changes and compute the MPG or amount of fuel
used on the drive and long the drive took).
-
The trainer then explains the principles of fuel efficient driving techniques; less harsh acceleration,
block gear changes, advanced planning to allow deceleration rather than braking.
-
The trainer gives a commentary drive demonstrating these techniques and his own benchmark figures are
computed for comparison with the delegates.
-
Each driver then takes another turn at the wheel for about 30 minutes each and starts to apply these
principles. Any serious driving faults (a serious fault being defined as one that would cause a fail
on an “L” test) that were identified during the benchmark
drive are addressed and fixed first and foremost.
-
The time is then spent evenly between the drivers practicing the new techniques.
-
The session finishes with a discussion about route planning for efficiency, safety and stress
reduction, and use of in-car technology such as cruise control and satelite navigation.
-
Finally each driver repeats the morning benchmark drive and the same metrics are used.
Hopefully the driver sees a significant improvement in the MPG figure as well as a drop
in the number of gear changes he or she needs to make.
This course comes with a certificate which is presented to the candidates on completion of the
course. The emphasis on this course is to eliminate any poor or dangerous driving habits/ styles,
and bring the driver up to a standard where he or she could expect to pass
the "L" test
if required, then improve the drivers Eco-Freindly driving style.
The safe and fuel effieient driving can be combined with the NVQ Level 3 in safe driving, to provide
a formal qualification of real merit to both employers and employees, as well as providing genuine benefits
to the employees eco-freindly driving style.
